Are Boards Up For The Challenge?

I recently had the good fortune to attend the Governance Institute of Australia’s National Conference in Sydney. The conference had as its theme – trust, respect, and challenge.
Each of those themes could command a session on its own, but arguably they are inextricably linked and therefore whatever is said about one will impact on the other two.
One of those 3 themes however appeared to be an odd one out. It was “challenge”.
The keynote speaker Sir Winfried Bischoff suggested, in fact, that boards ought to be robustly challenging management, a theme found also in the Hayne Royal Commission. So why is challenging an issue, what does it look like, who does it and when? Are we experiencing a dearth of practical answers?
