Not for Profit CEO remuneration falls for first time in 9 years

27 October 2009

For the first time in nine years, Not for Profit Chief Executive Officer average remuneration fell, dropping nearly 2% on 2008 figures.

That’s according to the just released Enterprise Care Not for Profit Remuneration Report, which surveyed nearly 1,800 positions in the Not for Profit sector during July and August of this year.

Confirming the CEO findings, thirteen of the fifteen other senior management positions surveyed also reported falling incomes this year.

Damien Smith, Managing Director of Enterprise Care, believes that the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and the uncertainty it brought for the immediate future has played a large part in this across the board decline.

Not for Profits may be at risk in the event of OH&S breaches

21 July 2009

Australian Not for Profit organisations are overwhelmingly aware of their need to comply with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) laws, but many are unsure if their insurance coverage will protect them in the event of a breach of the OH&S Act.

That’s according to a recent survey conducted by Enterprise Care of 92 Australian Not for Profit organisations.

The survey found that 99% of all respondents knew they had a legal obligation to address OH&S in their workplace.  However, over half of all respondents did not know, or were unsure, if they had an insurance policy to cover OH&S fines or legal fees in the event of prosecution.

Of those surveyed with insurance cover, 74% did not know, or were unsure, of how effective their insurance coverage actually was.

Not for Profit Boards Fail to Plan for the Future

10 December 2008

90% of Not for Profit Boards do not have a budget for professional development of individual Directors.  That’s according to a recent Enterprise Care survey of over 300 Not for Profit organisations.

The survey reveals that while a small number of Boards (46%) undergo training and professional development as a whole, individual directors are sorely neglecting their governance responsibilities.

Enterprise Care Managing Director Damien Smith says that this serious issue needs immediate attention.

“Good governance cannot happen without skilled and educated Chairpersons, Directors and CEOs.  It is extremely important that Board members understand their duties, responsibilities and legal requirements, and that they regularly undergo professional development to keep up with their increasingly significant responsibilities”.

Governance expert warns of danger to the Not for Profit sector

2 December 2008

Not for Profit governance expert Enterprise Care is calling on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to remember Not for Profit organisations, community groups and charities in the federal government’s financial bail-out package.

Enterprise Care Managing Director Damien Smith says that without the support these groups offer, many Australians are at risk of falling through the cracks in this economic downturn.

“These organisations are a safety-net for many lower- and middle-income earners, and often the first place families turn to in times of crisis.  It is important that our government supports these organisations to help those most at risk keep their heads above water” he said.

“One of the first casualties of an economy in recession is a reduction in sponsorship and donations, which is often the main source of income for Not for Profit groups.  It’s applaudable that Mr. Rudd is focused on keeping the economy going, but more needs to be done to ensure organisations in the Not for Profit sector remain viable”.

Remuneration for female CEOs down to only 79% of male earnings

13 November 2008

The just released Enterprise Care Not for Profit Remuneration Report reveals that remuneration rates for women in Chief Executive Officer positions in the Not for Profit sector have declined significantly since 2007.

The average remuneration rate fell to only 79% of male average earnings in 2008, down 6% since 2007.  This figure is the lowest percentage since 2001, when female earnings began a steady rise to within 85% of male earnings last year.

According to Damien Smith, Managing Director of Enterprise Care, this trend reversal shows that income prejudice is still alive and well in the Australian workplace.

“These figures show a strong reversal of the recent trend of growing equality in male and female CEO earnings” he said.

“2008 is the 10th year of this survey, and we can accurately track the progress of income equality in the workplace since figures were first recorded by Enterprise Care in 1998”.
