Governance Expert Warns of Danger to the Not for Profit sector

Not for Profit governance expert Enterprise Care is calling on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to remember Not for Profit organisations, community groups and charities in the federal government's financial bail-out package.
Enterprise Care Managing Director Damien Smith says that without the support these groups offer, many Australians are at risk of falling through the cracks in this economic downturn.
`These organisations are a safety-net for many lower- and middle-income earners, and often the first place families turn to in times of crisis. It is important that our government supports these organisations to help those most at risk keep their heads above water` he said.
`One of the first casualties of an economy in recession is a reduction in sponsorship and donations, which is often the main source of income for Not for Profit groups. It's applaudable that Mr. Rudd is focused on keeping the economy going, but more needs to be done to ensure organisations in the Not for Profit sector remain viable`.
Mr. Smith said he was extremely pleased to see the Rudd Government commit funds for homelessness at the recent COAG meeting, but urged the Prime Minister to take this initiative further.
`We need to take decisive action and look further afield than just the issue of homelessness, especially coming into the Christmas period, which can often be the hardest time of year for those already struggling` he said.
`I implore Mr. Rudd to take the lead on this important issue, and ensure the Not for Profit sector is not left off the government's agenda in 2009`.
